#WakandaCon leverages the pop culture phenomenon of the Black Panther movie to engage its fandom, enthusiasts, and activists in a process of collective imagining and world building for Black Liberation and #FreedomCities.
#WakandaCon will bridge the worlds of comic fandom and #blacktivism under a value of emergence and celebrate the organic self-organizing nature of fandom. #WakandaCon builds on the aesthetics and pop culture appeal of the fictional Kingdom of Wakanda, home of the Black Panther/King T'Challa, to develop a vision, principles, values and framework for prefigurative organizing of a new base of artists and fans for black liberation and the establishment of #FreedomCities.
Initially, #WakandaCon will be a portal and platform for fan-owned and generated resources. There will be a collectively developed fan-activist resource database and online community. We will catalyze and co-create resources such as toolkits, podcasts, webinars, twitter town halls, and events. These will culminate in an in-person Convention, Conference, & Convening. that would take place in 2019.
WakandaCon is a collaboration of Intelligent Mischief, Mobilize the Immigrant Vote, and Movement Strategy Center.
